Thumbnail image for seo-charlotte.jpgWhat's the difference between "on page" and "off page" SEO? These terms are routinely tossed around as if those new to the art and science of search engine optimization were to understand them without question. Let's try and clarify this terminology a bit.

On-page SEO concentrates on page content and the structure of the website (navigation for instance), while off-page optimization focuses more on your site's relationship with other sites. Both on-page and off-page are essential to achieving a better rank on search result pages.

On-page optimization techniques include (but are not limited to) content writing/optimization, the title-tag, several META-Tags, headlines & text decoration, alt- and title-attributes and sitemaps. The focus of off-page optimization is link building (whether through direct exchanges with other sites, directory submissions, article writing, press releases, etc.)

When someone speaks about achieving success with SEO, you can count on the fact that they have successfully balanced their efforts with on-page and off-page SEO. In the end however, those with the most links wins so after you've developed good content and the appropriate meta data for each page, move forward full-force with building links. In fact, I would advise that at least 80% of your time should be spent marketing your site, earning links and the remainder of your web time be spent writing new content and fixing issues which impact conversion.

google-seo.gifI recommend you take a look at (and join) Google Knol (a knol is a unit of knowledge) Knol looks very professional and not as scrappy as the giant Wikipedia project.

If you are a professional copywriter and can write great articles you can also make an income using Google adSense and contribute to a worthwhile cause at the same time.

Personally I see Google Knol and photo sharing service Panaramio being pulled into the glorious Google Maps in the near future - can't wait!

Check out Google Knol, Google Panaramio and of course Google Picasa

I have my own personal Knol here http://knol.google.com/k/david-saunders/david-saunders

Do you get automated web position reports from your SEO company - Personally I don't use Web Ranking Position checkers these days as I always felt a little like a "burglar" querying the likes of Google to get a Ranking Report automatically generated

Basically a remote crawler from Web Position Gold and WEB CEO will crawl Google, Yahoo!, MSN and the other search engines and automatically send you a great looking ranking report from your really cool SEO - SEM.

I know of several SEO services that do this to brag about results and others where the client (usually Real Estate Agents) demand to know where they rank - can't they see for themselves?

I've, also, always thought about showing up (or not) on different search engines in weird positions irrelevant to a local ISP based search.

Here it is from the Google Webmaster Guidlines

"Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our Terms of Service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google."

If you have any questions about this please call me and watch out for SEO Consultants that offer fancy ranking reports
